Our Battle Born History

During the Civil War, the Nevada Territory broke a world record by sending its state constitution to President Lincoln via telegraph made possible by the Enabling Act of 1864. The President signed it to enable Nevada to become a state on October 31, 1864. So, every October, Nevadans celebrate our statehood on Nevada Day and we, at Windy Pinwheel, are no exception. This year, we are celebrating by not only giving you coloring book pages for free, but also giving one of our lucky readers a wonderful book about Nevada. S is for Silver is a beautiful book with a little fact about Nevada for each letter of the alphabet. For more information about the giveaway, check out the information below.

There are so many great events happening in Northern Nevada this year, we hope you can check out some of them and celebrate the uniqueness of Nevada. One of our favorites is the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City. I personally attended this parade nearly every year as a child. This is one of those hometown parades that truly stirs up a sense of well founded pride for your state.

While you’re in Carson City, consider visiting a State Museum, especially the Carson City Railroad Museum, which will be running the McKeen Motor Car on the 27th of October (the McKeen Motor Car was just named a National Historic Landmark) is always a great idea for Nevada day. You might even consider taking your little Nevadans to the Discovery Museum in Reno, which has several Nevada themed exhibits. And for you runnin’ mamas, check out the annual Nevada Day Run/Walk.
