This is one of my best memories during the period of time from when my wife told me she was pregnant to the birth of my child, the all-important “nesting” period. In fact, I wrote an article about the design for my son’s room.

My other two children are girls and for each of them we went with a pink ballerina theme in one room and a lavender and white theme in my youngest daughter’s room.

Before designing these rooms here in Reno, Nevada, when my wife and I lived in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, we had a light pink and sea-foam green paint color scheme with a white stripe in the middle of the wall to separate the two colors with a vinyl cling message that was on her wall that read, “You are my Sunshine” and in my son’s room, we had a Red Sox red and blue color with a vinyl wall decal that was a road sign of how far away baseball stadiums were from our home (Fenway Park and Nationals Stadium).

It broke my heart to paint them back to white before moving back home, here to Reno, but we do still have pictures that I fondly look at from time-to-time.

Designing a child’s room is as much for the parent as it is for the child while they are still young, but there are also times when the child grows out of the nursery colors and furniture to their own tastes and wants. Below are some great tips on that period when your child wants to give their room a makeover. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did.

Designing a Kids’ Room from Start to Finish: How to Do It Like A Pro

If you have kids, you can’t avoid the inevitable forever: designing a bedroom for them that meets all their needs, stores all their stuff, and gives them space to do what they enjoy. Babies’ rooms are easy – paint the walls light blue or pink, grab a crib, some stuffed animals, and make room for lots of diapers! Kids, however, are a lot more complicated when it comes to their interior design needs because they want a say!

While kids aren’t the toughest audience to impress, there are some easy ways to avoid a design disaster. This is how to design a kid’s room like an absolute pro – from start to finish.

Choose carpet or hardwood.
This choice may haunt you forever, so be careful. While most bedrooms have carpet floors, especially for kids to prevent slips, opting for a hardwood finish may save you a lot of time and stress in the long run. Hardwood floors hold less dust mites than carpet when it comes allergy season and are exponentially easier to clean. Instead of scrubbing a carpet floor with a brush (knowing you’ll never really get the mud stain out,) you can mop and go without leaving a trace.
Paint the walls.
If your kids are old enough, let them pick the wall color to showcase their creativity, style, and make them proud to call their bedroom home. While dark colors like dark grey and deep blue should perhaps be avoided as to not risk making the room appear smaller, any other color can be a go, as long as you and your tot agree.
Set up furniture before decorations.
You don’t want to be moving furniture to accommodate the placement of a picture frame, so opt for moving beds, chairs, desks, couches, etc…in first. Beds should be in a place where natural light can shine in and wake your child naturally. Desks should also be in a place easily accessible to light. Ask your child where he or she wants her furniture, as some kids would rather not have their bed near the scary-at-night-closet.

Decide on a bedspread.
Once the furniture is set up, decide on a bedspread that accents the walls. Usually, you can decorate in a three-step method color-wise: pick a wall color, pick bedspread that has a color in it that matches walls, then make the other accent colors of the bedroom whatever remaining colors there are on the bedspread. This will make the room look cohesive and well-planned, even though implementing it is super easy!
Find décor that matches your bedspread’s accent colors.
This is where you can really get creative with a child’s bedroom and make it all their own. While pictures of friends and family can easily adorn the walls for a cute look, opt for some unique decorations, too, like one of these custom neon signs for kids. Let your kids have a say in this part of the process, as they probably have some unique ideas of their own that they’d like to see brought to life in their bedroom.
Make sure the room is functional.
While having completely clear floors may fit your dream aesthetic, it may not fit a child’s bedroom. Having bins and cubes throughout the room for toy storage is a must, or these items will simply end up all over the floor. Find cute storage bins from your local home stores that match the room’s accent colors, and they will fit in seamlessly while adding functional storage. Likewise, if your child needs a stepping stool to reach his or her bed or top shelves, provide one that matches the room and is always easily accessible for him or her to help her gain independence.
Get the thumbs-up from your kid when you’re done.
Once all is said and done, getting the approval of your child is a must, so you know they are happy with their space. Asking them questions like this will also reinforce to them that their opinion matters, and that you value their input when it comes to big decisions that affect them. If there is anything (within reason) they’d like to change, go ahead and work with them to do it. Encourage them to keep adding to the room throughout the upcoming months with artwork to hang on the walls, DIY storage, etc… to encourage creativity and help them feel that the space is truly theirs.

Implement these strategies the next time it’s time to design a child’s bedroom, and you can’t fail. After all, a child’s room is all about possibility, experiences, and FUN! Make this experience a fun one with your kid and the room will show it.

Ways to introduce your child to tools and teach tool safety

Introducing your child to tools provides a great opportunity for them to learn how to work with their hands to build and assemble something. However, it is very important that you pick the right tools to start with, keeping their safety in mind. We share four tools that are good to introduce at different stages of a child’s development.

Power Tools

If you have a really young child, start with some of the tools recommended below that don’t require power. However, once your child outgrows these, here are some basic power tools to start with that are safe.

Impact Driver

Many think that that the best power tool to start their child off with is a drill, but an impact driver is actually far safer. Used for similar purposes such as driving screws into a variety of materials, an impact driver is a great first tool for your child.

Impact drivers are smaller that drills, which will allow it to fit better in a child’s hand. The quick connector is much easier to tighten than the screw chuck that is standard with a drill.

In the end, you can do virtually the same things with the driver. Opt for this tool as the perfect first tool for your eager young woodworker.

Jigsaw

Lets be clear – a jigsaw is not a tool that you want to leave your child alone with. But, with supervision, it is the best powered saw to start with. There are a couple of reasons for this.

First off, opt for a well reviewed jigsaw that isn’t likely to break on you. A cordless option can also be good, as there is less to get in the way while cutting.

The jigsaw is great because you can make slow cuts with your hands away from the blade. Blades are easy to change, and you can opt for a blade that doesn’t have dangerous teeth.

Kids love jigsaws too, as they allow them to make intricate, curvy cuts that are fun and interesting.

Non Power Tools

If your kids are too young for powered tools, or you’re looking to supplement what they already have, here are some great options to consider.

Block Plane

These hand planers are fantastic for kids. While they require supervision, they are not very dangerous to use. And, this tool allows a child to put finishing touches on all of their wood projects.

This is one of the best tools for a child to see instant gratification for their work. Within minutes, they can take a piece of wood from rough to smooth, all the while seeing the wood shavings as they come off.

Wrench and Ratchet Set

Ratchet and wrench sites come in all shapes and sizes, and are fantastic sets for children to tinker around with. There are a variety of different projects that a kid can work on with these sets, ranging from cars to bikes to anything else you pick up at the local thrift store.

Combine this set with some of the other tools mentioned, and your child would be able to assemble a wide array of fun projects.

Safety Considerations

At the end of the day, the parent is always the one responsible for a child’s safety while using tools. Manufacturers don’t publish recommended ages for any of their tools, and so it falls on the parent to be the final judge.

Teaching children a healthy respect of what each tool is capable of is important. Reviewing the dangers that each tool posses is also important. Once a child is able to understand what each tool is capable of, they can begin to understand how to stay safe while using it.

Review: iRobot Braava Jet robot mop by iRobot

It’s the little iRobot that could product review. The iRobot Braava Jet robot mop. A great tool for cleaning hard surface floor areas between each time you mop.

First, as a disclaimer, up front, I was in no way prompted to write this review of the iRobot Braava Jet, nor were any goods sent to me in exchange for my opinion or review. I own this product outright and my wife and I paid out of our own pocket for it.

Now that the disclaimer (for legal purposes) is out of the way, let’s begin. My wife started our love affair for home automation in household products that help us clean our home when she purchased an iRobot vacuum. From there, it quickly jumped into one for the upstairs and another for the downstairs (the downstairs version is a Shark brand vacuum). Naturally, when iRobot came out with another option in the form of a mop, we just had to get it.

We can’t tell you how much time these tools in our house save us in the form of time. We can spend more time with our children, driving them to and from their afternoon activities. We can join our children in helping them with their homework. We can relax after a hard day’s work knowing that we have a merry maid in our service in the form of a robotic helper from the iRobot family of products.

Gone are the days when we would grab for the broom after dinner when morsels would fall from the mouths of our young children or time spent sweeping up the shed hair that naturally falls off of our family pet. These days, we can rest assured that we have electronic help in a fantastic product line from iRobot. The Braava Jet is no exception.

Windy Pinwheel Reviews: iRobot Braava Jet

The iRobot Braava Jet is the quaint little robot that could (to paraphrase a children’s tale about a little locomotive that made it up a steep hill).

This mop is a great tool to keep around for your “in-between” cleanings or any time between a full mopping of your floors. It uses only water (we use distilled water only in ours) and the pad is where you can choose to use a dusting, cleaning or scrubbing pad. The pad itself, depending on which one you choose, will have a cleaning solution on it or just a pad to collect any dirt since the last cleaning.

You can purchase additional batteries and chargers to keep your iRobot Braava Jet going all day long. It is very quiet, descreet and it is about the size of your hand. It can fit in hard-to-reach areas like bathrooms, around your toilet, under cabinets and in tight corners. This little workhorse is a great addition to any home as a utility tool for cleaning every day or every other day.

This little miracle of a product uses only water (we use distilled water to remove any possibility of any impurities clogging up the sprayer as our tap water could possibly calcify where water comes out). Depending on the type of pad, it will sweep, dust or clean your floor. Each pad you put on the iRobot Braava Jet determines what will happen with the sprayer and the cleaning solution, if you choose that type of pad, is in the pad itself. So, any spray that possibly hits a wall or a chair while cleaning won’t ruin it.

Additionally, this product is very small, about the size of my hand and short enough to get under cabinets and around toilets in bathrooms. Just turn on the iRobot Braava Jet and shut the bathroom door and let it go to work while you enjoy some tea and catching up on emails or helping your kids get ready for school.

The sprayer is very quiet and you almost can’t hear it running. At times, however, when it is under a cabinet and it is able to touch the cabinet itself, you can hear the vibration, but only for a second as it will move very quickly after it touches each spot.

We also decided to get an extra charger and cleaning pads when we first got the iRobot Braava Jet robot mop.

One of the only drawbacks of this device is that you can’t be dependent upon it for a thorough cleaning. It is more meant for a touch up between the times that you mop your floor. If you ran it every day, however, you might be able to get away with it as your primary floor cleaning device, but we typically run it as often as every other day to once per week. Also, we now always stock distilled water under our kitchen sink so that we can run the robot mop any time we like during the week.

Automatically selects the correct cleaning mode based on Braava jet pad type, choose from wet mopping, damp sweeping and dry sweeping;
Won’t spray or harm walls and furniture, avoids stairs and riding up on rugs; and
Tip – Before using a Wet Mopping or Damp Sweeping pad, use a Dry Sweeping pad or vacuum to clean loose debris.

Bonus features according to my experience:

Option to purchase additional batteries to swap out to keep your iRobot Braava Jet going all day long; and
Cleaning pads come in the form of reusable pads to single-use pads, from dusting pads to pads infused with cleaning solution to keep your hard surface floors clean between regular moppings.

Whether you’ve built a home before or it’s your first time, getting inspiration for the home design build is usually the hardest part. Whether it’s deciding what style to go for or what kind of entryways you need, home builders of all types sometimes just need a little kick in the right direction when it comes to home design.

Here are some home design ideas to inspire your next build:

Arches Galore

Whether it’s a beach house in California or the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, arched doorways and vaulted ceilings are a great way not only to give your house design space, but a unique touch.

Arches have been a staple in many cultures for centuries, as the design itself promises stability and elegance in its simplicity.

It’s important to note that there are several different styles and shapes of arches.

First, you have the Roman style, which is your most classic and commonly used in home building. Similar to the arches that you’ll find in the Colosseum, these are semi-circles over doors or windows.
You also have Segmental (sometimes called a scheme arch), which as the name suggests is only a semi-curve, stopping before it completes at less than 180 degrees. Think of the kind of arch found with bricks for this kind of arch over doorways, fireplaces, and windows in 20th century architecture.
You have Gothic, which most people will remember from Gothic churches, with their very noticeable point at the top.
Tudor arches (also known as a four-centred arch) are much wider than Gothic, but still have a point on the top.
And lastly, the Moorish arch (or Horseshoe), is a bit more unique but curves longer than the typical Roman arch to create a horseshoe effect.

Modern architecture is on the rise and its clean lines and re-purposed materials are a huge hit in North America when it comes to home design.

Some qualities you should try incorporating in your home design to give your build a modern touch are large open spaces, use of natural light, using green or re-purposed materials, and mixing both horizontal and vertical lines.

When looking at the exterior of your home, go for large windows on the unobstructed side of your house to let the most natural light in throughout the day. Go minimal on window treatments like curtains or blinds, to ensure nothing is keeping out the light.

Small touches that make a huge difference in your home design are the angle of your roof or materials used on the siding. Make sure you take inspiration from more industrial buildings to get that super unique look.

Speaking of natural light, something that can really enhance your home design living space is using lightwells to your advantage. A lightwell is an unroofed area in your house, used in architectural design to bring in natural light and fresh air.

The lightwell design isn’t a new idea by any means in home design, but just like the arch, has been around for centuries. In Ancient Greece, Greek people naturally used these types of spaces to open up their homes and bring in as much light as possible.

The effect of a few simple lightwells can transform a home design and bring in a feature that is fun and interesting.

A New Take on an Old Idea in Home Design

The most unique designs today are not necessarily new ideas, but simply a new take on an old idea for home design.

Take the new trend of treehouse style homes, like this inverted roof example in China that brings a childish idea and makes it new and stylish instead. Or, for the seaworthy, people are even designing lighthouse style homes to replicate their favourite beach fronts and keep their home design fresh and unique.

The trick is to find a home design that means something to you and put a spin on it.

Take your favorite castle from England and grab small elements from it to incorporate in your new home design. Like industrial buildings? Incorporate a garage door as a focal point of your living room to give it a unique spin.

Overall, if you’re looking for inspiration for your new build project, get out there and look around! There are so many people doing cool things nowadays, that sometimes you just need a little bit of an idea before you’ll get the lightbulb moment you need for your custom home design.

Of course, for each parent, it is a personal decision they must make, but when it comes to vaccines, my wife and I are firm believers in the value and importance of getting our children vaccinated.

Over the years, vaccines have helped in boosting our healthcare system. There are so many examples of diseases that have been completely wiped out by vaccines. For the purpose of this article, we shall look into three diseases namely diphtheria, chickenpox, and polio.

Diphtheria

This is an obscure disease that has been killing babies for many years, until babies started to get diphtheria vaccines. Today, common vaccines protect children against disease like the DTap administered to babies that completely protects them against whopping cough or pertussis, tetanus, and diphtheria. Although, it is highly preventable, but it is no longer a killer disease.

Diphtheria makes a child to develop a thick covering on their throats or in the back of their nose. This disease’s impact can have consequences rendered in multiple ways. It can lead to paralysis, heart failure, difficulty breathing and even death. Ensure you vaccinate your child against diphtheria today.

For maximum protection, healthcare specialists recommend that you give your child at least five doses of DTap vaccine. Your child will get each of these doses within 2 months, 4 months and 6 months of birth, then 15 to 18 months and between 4 to 6 years of age.

Next in our list of how vaccines protect children against disease is a serious illnesses is chickenpox. Chickenpox is a killer disease that causes fever or itchy rash of blisters on your child. If a child contracts chickenpox, he or she will have many blisters numbering up to 500 all over their body. Chickenpox is a life threatening disease among babies, especially those with weakened immune system. Vaccinating your child is the safest way of keeping him or her healthy. For best protection, healthcare specialists recommend that you give your child at least 2 doses of chickenpox injections. The first can be given within 12 to 15 months, and 4 through 6 years.

Polio

Finally, in our list of ways that vaccines protect children against disease is polio, a deadly infectious and crippling disease that is caused by poliovirus. It is a communicable disease which can pass from one person to another. Polio is so dangerous that it can affect the victim’s spinal cord or brain, thereby cause paralysis. As an anecdote, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt contracted polio and was paralyzed as a result and the March of Dimes formed to eradicate this disease from the planet and still thrives today in working "to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality". This illness is no joke and another reason why vaccines protect children against disease and you should take heed.

The United States, today, is polio-free, thanks to vigilant and persistent vaccination of children in our country. But in some parts of the world, especially Asia and Africa, polio is still a life threatening disease. Ensuring that children are properly vaccinated against polio remains the ideal way of eradicating polio in the world.

Healthcare experts recommend that every child should get four dosages of polio vaccines, which is known as IPV for maximum protection. The first dose will be given at 2 months, another at 4 months, then the third one can come between 6 through 18 months and finally 4 through 6 years.
