Play soccer, join the Washoe Little League, have a picnic or just play at the playground at the South Valleys Regional Sports Complex Reno Nevada

This playground is suitable for ages 2 years-old and up. My 6 year-old and 3 year-old found a lot to do while we visited. They have various structures of varying ability, a spider dome/bar climbing structure (I had one of these at my elementary school while growning up and it brought up a memory or two on the playground at school), a rock climb/stair climb, swings for toddlers/babies, slides of varying height, speed and incline, tubes for little ones to climb through, spinning match games and more. My son found a little Easter Egg underneath the rock climbing stair structure, a velociraptor skeleton to look like a fossile in rock molded into the rock wall plastic.

When it comes to swings at the South Valleys Regional Sports Complex Reno Nevada, this playground only houses two toddler/infant swings. Swings that are suitable for very young children. Unfortunately, there are no swings for older children here. However, there is a dinosaur rocker nearby that children through the age of 10 years-old can enjoy in lieu of swings for older children. For as much as this playground contains, this is one item necessary for nearly any playground where it is sorely lacking. Perhaps, if there is every an expansion of the playground area, this could be something for City of Reno officials to add to the playground area.

While we were there, we found a couple of broken items on the playground, a wheel that was missing to power a spinning piston engine (it was about 8 pistons in a see-through view with gears that would spin to power the pistons), a platform with caution tape and some other things missing their steering wheels to spin them. With a minimal budget for park maintenance at the City of Reno, according to the Reno-Gazette Journal as recently as December 2015, it is understandable why these items were broken and I imagine that they will remain broken and in disrepair for some time until city parks are a focus in the city budget. Given all of these things, however, the park is maintained when it comes to regularly mowed lawns and no refuse outside of garbage cans and there is no sign of spray paint on anything at the park (sometimes tagging can happen to parks). So, the park is visibly pleasant to attend, overall.

Some of the larger play structures at the South Valleys Regional Sports Complex Reno Nevada playground may require adult supervision for younger children. My youngest is 3 years-old at the time of this article and she had no problem navigating the playground equipment. However, there were some larger items where I wanted to play the role of helicopter parent and hover over her as she scaled things like the rock climb stairs and the spider/bar dome. Not all things here at this playground will let you, as a parent remain carefree as to the safety of your child, but with increased potential hazards, the more likely an older child will find joy and adventure on those items that were difficult to scale when they were younger. So, overall, it is a trade-off, safety for fun in this case. Like I wrote above, however, my child of 3 years-old was able to use everything, it was only in some cases where I wanted to be close by in case she happened to slip off of a bar or stair.

There are also two covered areas that you can reserve with the city for special events and occasions like outdoor picnics, birthday parties or maybe a family reunion. One of these covered areas has a barbecue pit for charcoal briquettes and nearby there is a lot of wide open area covered with grass for a game of catch, Frisbee or toss with a football.

Both above and below the South Valleys Regional Sports Complex Reno Nevada playground area are soccer fields that are used nearly every day of the week for practices with Great Basin Youth Soccer teams or games on most afternoons of the week and on Saturdays. Most of these fields will be reserved, so, they may not be free to play on in any given day, but occasionally you may find an open field to play on if you bring a ball or kite to the park. Just be prepared to be asked to move off the field if it is reserved by a team for practice or a game.

Speaking of Frisbee, down in the canyon adjacent to the South Valleys Regional Sports Complex Reno Nevada playground I found a pole with chains on it that is used for Frisbee disc golf. I imagine this pole is a part of a larger Frisbee golf course that is 1 of 4 courses located in the Reno and Sparks area according to the Reno Disc Golf Association, and I could only see one other pole in the distance in this canyon near the hill that leads up to the I-595 freeway, and there are others poles that constitute an entire course. The area has a lot of vegetation (sagebrush and other desert plants) so if you happen to lose a Frisbee disc you may not be able to find it easily. If you are interested in playing “Disc Golf” at this location, check out the Facebook group for the Reno Disc Golf Association and join with others who enjoy the sport.

Finally, as this location is close to the Washoe Little League fields there is another playground near those fields close by. Please note that you cannot play on the Washoe Little League baseball fields as they are only reserved for the little league, but you can find others in the area where you can play like the fields at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex in Sparks or Idlewild Park.

Overall, my kids were easily entertained at the South Valleys Regional Sports Complex Reno Nevada playground and there no complaints from either of the two kids in the hour that we spent there during my oldest daughter’s soccer practice this past week. We saw another parent bring a picnic for one of the covered areas and then their kids played afterwards. If you’re looking for another park to visit in Reno Nevada, this is a good stop because it is clean, has structures for children of varying abilities and there is a lot of open space for any activities where you might need space like a game of catch or to fly a kite (it’s nearly always windy in Reno, Nevada which makes a day to fly a kite almost every day of the year).

Get outdoors and experience Pah Rah Mountain Park in Sparks, Nevada

Last weekend, I had the chance to have an adventure and get out of the house with my son and visit Pah Rah Mountain Park (hereafter referred to as Pah Rah) in Sparks, Nevada.

What I was most impressed with is the main disability accessible playground. Any child, including children that may use a wheelchair or assistive device(s) can have a great time here.

Pah Rah has several other amenities as well. The park boasts two gazeebo areas, two horseshoe pit areas with two pits each, two volleyball court areas, two tennis courts, and a basketball court. All of these features are on top of the wide open grass areas. This park has it all; to please anyone from a child to an adult.

Further, shade is plentiful at this park. Unlike the local parks for me in South Reno, this park has mature trees and gazebos for shade to cool down on a hot day.

Finally, there are charcoal barbecues throughout the park. So, if you are looking to picnic or barbecue with friends outdoors, Pah Rah may be a great choice to visit.

My son and I had a fantastic time at this park and you are sure to as well. If you ever find yourself in Sparks, please take a minute and stop by Pah Rah Mountain Park. You’ll be glad you did.

Casual playtime.

On any given day, this is the scene one will find at Horizon View Park Reno, Nevada located in Southeast Reno near Depoali Middle School.

Complete with a set of swings and four separate slides, a rock to climb and a rentable shade shelter/structure. This park has all the goods for regular attendance.

Within walking distance from where my family and I live, this was a great park to visit for a casual occasion. Although it may not have all the features that Damonte Ranch Park has, it is still worth a visit or even regular visits.

The park is in a wide open space surrounding the play area with grass (perfect for flying a kite on one of Reno’s many windy days), benches and a sidewalk walking/running path with structures to exercise on/with. The inside area of the park is the play structure with four slides, a wind catching art element that spins, a man-made climbing rock (my four-year-old scaled it easily and was able to get down on her own, although it could be a possible hazard for anyone of a younger age or lesser ability) and four swings – two of which are built for toddlers (this is a bonus for me as I have a 22 month-old and he still can’t pump his legs yet).

Even though the day was warm, there was a large shaded structure to sit under complete with four tables with bench seats to cool down.

There are no places to barbecue, so if you want to barbecue at a park like this one, you’ll need to bring your own mini barbecue grill or something like the Weber Q Grill.

The play area is padded rubber under foot and even though it was warm, the heat didn’t reflect off the surface too much (most likely because of the dark color of the surface absorbing the heat).

While my kids and I visited the park, seven or eight kids also came up to play as well. From my impression, it appears that this park is well trafficked by residents of the surrounding communities.

Horizon View Park is accessible via the Double Diamond Ranch Walking/Bike Path (a wetland waterway complete vegetation and wildlife) or by vehicle using Wilbur May Parkway (conveniently located off of South Meadows Parkway or Double Diamond Parkway).

In all, this is a great park to walk to and visit when you are seeking to spend an hour or two at a park in the area. It has enough to keep the kids occupied and enough to keep the parents happy and engaged while their kids are at play.

Damonte Ranch Park is one of the newer parks in the Truckee Meadows area located off Damonte Ranch Parkway/Steamboat Parkway in South Reno, Nevada.

First, I must say that Damonte Ranch Park in Reno, Nevada is awesome!

That being said and out of the way, I can now discuss the features of the park. This park’s main feature is a three-story structure with four slides (two of them enclosed). There is also a zip-line-like sliding feature for kids to zip back and forth from station to station. A climbing net, climbing bars, musical note tonal pipes and a rope-like platform crossing feature for kids to climb across from platform to platform. A rock wall, plenty of stairs, a lookout roost and what resembles a rocket ship bridge at the very top of the structure. That’s just covering the larger structure.

The smaller structure, designed for toddler-aged children, boasts four slides a matching puzzle game and more climbing bars.

Damonte Ranch Park also has more for the avid park-goer. There are two regular swings and two swings for children who can’t hold on or pump their legs very well yet, swings designed for toddler use. A frog statue that my son loves and a 4-way teeter-totter.

Want more? There are plenty of paths around the park to run, ride a bike, or ride anything like a skateboard or roller skates on as well as two basketball hoops for the budding basketball star in the family.

If you’re looking for shade, this park doesn’t have much in the way of shade unless you hang out under the slides of the larger structure when it is warm outside. Also, there is a gazebo near the parking area that many-a-birthday party sightings have occurred. You can learn more about reserving this shelter from the City of Reno by visiting the Reno.gov website.

There is also a great deal of open space covered in grass and hills for the kids to climb and wear themselves out on. We know that wearing out our kids is just the bonus that comes with visiting a place like this.

During the Spring or Fall seasons you might catch a local soccer team out practicing with soccer nets (my son had practice there for a season)

Beyond many of these features listed above, I find myself driving my kids over there or riding my bike from the Cyan neighborhood nearby to this park. Even though there are a lot of children who frequent Damonte Ranch Park, it never feels too crowded. You’re bound to find enough space for you and your kids to have a great time. My kids are often spending time at the top of the play structure, sliding down slides, on the swings or out in the fields playing with our dogs by throwing a ball for them to fetch. They just love this place when we visit this park. We really enjoy ourselves here.

Overall, this park has everything to entertain from the level of a toddler to a seasoned veteran of climbing and playing. My kids had a lot of fun here.

The only thing I would recommend as a word of caution is making sure your kids understand that the log looking feature on the larger structure is not a slide and not easy to climb. My oldest fell off of it, thinking it was a slide, within five minutes of arriving at the park on her first visit (she was 3.5 years-old at the time). She didn’t hurt herself too bad, but this is definitely one feature of the park to avoid, if you can, if you have young children because it is uneven and often slippery for young children to climb on.

You’ll definitely have a good time here and I highly recommend a visit.
