4 ways to protect your child from drowning in the off-season

Did you know that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) names drowning as the top cause of unintentional deaths for children ages 1-4 years? An astounding 58% of these occur in in-ground pools.

But never fear: here are four ways to ensure pool safety to protect your little one from drowning during the off-season.

1. Invest in a pool fence.

A pool fence can be the ultimate safeguard for your home when it comes to pool safety. All kids have the tendency to wander off to forbidden areas, and this can include your backyard and pool area. In fact, more than 75 percent of children who drown are seen five minutes or less before they are discovered in the pool. Reduce the risk dramatically by blocking off the water, and ensure the gate to enter has a self-latching, child-safety lock on it to deter even the craftiest of children.

2. Ensure that pool drain and filter covers are secure and out of reach.

From 2005 to 2007, 24 cases (and two deaths) were reported of a child becoming trapped in a pool or spa drain. Kids have been known to play with an open drain only to have hair, a hand or a foot get caught in the suction, leaving them unable to escape. Public pools are required by law to adhere to specific child-safe drain covers; these kinds of covers might be a valuable option for your own home as a pool safety measure!

3. Keep that rescue equipment right where it is.

If you have a pool and a young child, you certainly have a life preserver and shepherd’s hook by the pool. Keep them there! Even if your pool is covered for the season, even if your gate is locked and secured, always keep your pool safety tools handy.

4. Consider an extra, louder layer of protection.

Being a single mother or single parent, in general, isn’t easy. You have to juggle between your job, kids, their school, or even daycare for the youngest ones. Since entire household depends only on you, it might get overwhelming sometimes. Luckily, with your determination to provide your children the best possible childhood and implementation of a few healthy habits, you can become more productive and still have time to appreciate every moment spent with your children.

1. Be proactive

Single parenthood comes with a lot of obstacles and pressure on both you and your children. In order to handle this pressure and stress, adequately counseling or any other type of help is a good idea. First, there is nothing wrong in asking for one’s help, and second, having a “neutral” person you and your children can talk to will be a great reliever. Plus, acknowledging your own emotions, fears, hopes, and opinions will help you handle the present situation in a healthy manner. From experience, as a single mother, the most common mistake single parents make is assuming they are the victims. The most important thing is to avoid stressing out over things that do not belong on your list of priorities. When you dwell on everything, you lose focus. 3. Take care of yourself

When you know you’re not alone, it becomes easier for you to handle everyday situations efficiently mostly because you have support from other members of the community. But, don’t stop there. Build a diverse community. Also, connect with your friends, family and other people you might have neglected. Some of them can babysit for you and be a huge help. When you’re not isolated your social life becomes richer. In order to be productive, it is important to socialize and connect as a single mother, plus you want to teach your children it is okay to have a broad circle of friends instead of isolating from society.

Organization is the key. The better you get organized, the more productive you will be. Therefore you should know certain ways to survive as a single mother which can help you to be more organized in an effective manner. Start with creating systems for grocery shopping and meals. Introduce some healthy habits. Organize your kids’ bedtime, school and chore routines. Prepare everything your children will need for school and what you will need to wear to work the night before instead of hurrying to catch up on everything in the morning. Getting organized requires determination and discipline, but it makes your life as a single mother easier and you can become more productive.

6. Understand and be understood

Communicate with your kids. Make sure you understand how they feel, whether they are worried, sad, angry, etc. Demonstrate to them that they can trust you in order to create a great bond that is based on trust. Moreover, keeping secrets and sugarcoating doesn’t always work. Be honest with your children and confide in them as much as you’d want them to confide in you. Understand and be understood.

If you’re going through a difficult divorce, it would be helpful for you and your children not to point fingers and blame anyone as that would make children feel torn.

When you show your kids you understand them and when you feel you’re understood, it’s going to be easier for you. Instead of drama and emotional trials, you will be more relaxed and focused on your priorities.

7. Look forward not backwards

Looking backwards doesn’t help and it drains all the energy out of you. Instead, concentrate on your priorties and look forward to having a great future with your children as a single mother. Looking forward gives you the freedom to plan and organize in order to achieve more. Thinking about what was and what could have been can make you lose your focus. Being more productive and achieving more in life is about thinking about the future instead of dwelling in the past. Plus, your children will appreciate it.

Protect your family from scalding hot water by adjusting your hot water heater settings.

As a parent, it’s an exciting day when your child is responsible enough to bathe him or herself. Whether your kiddo prefers a bath or a shower though, some safety precautions are necessary to ensure that he or she doesn’t get scalded by too-hot water, even after they have reached the age where they can be trusted to wash behind the ears.

According to the Burn Foundation, 500,000 scalding injuries occur annually in the United States, with kids under five years-old at high risk. The good news is that by adjusting your settings, you can ensure that the water will never be scalding hot. Read on for some hot water safety tips for your hot water heater.

Hot tap water, which causes 17 percent of burn and scalding injuries, can cause a third-degree burn in just five seconds at a temperature of 140 degrees.

The easy fix?

Set your water heater temperature to no higher than 120 degrees. Most people bathe at a temperature no hotter than 100 degrees, and 110 is plenty hot enough to effectively wash dishes and laundry. In addition to keeping your kids safe, you’ll also be saving energy by making the switch to a lower temperature. If you’re not sure of your hot water settings, run your sink at the hottest setting for five minutes and place a thermometer under the stream. And if you live in an apartment and don’t have access to your water heater, talk with your landlord about adjusting the settings to a safe level.

Beyond adjusting your water heater settings, doing your due diligence as a parent can go a long way toward preventing scalding injuries. Always test the water before your child gets into the bathtub; if it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely too hot for their sensitive skin. And never leave a child younger than age five unattended in the bathtub. Avoid bathing infants in the sink, where it’s easier to accidentally turn the hot water on.

Consider installing safety devices on your faucets. These mechanisms keep your child from accidentally turning on the hot water, preventing them from receiving an accidental burn. As parents, we are very careful to make sure our kids don’t have access to any type of flame; matches, for example, or the stovetop. However, the fact is that many more burn injuries happen because of hot water than because of open flames.
