You rely on them to keep your home and family safe and healthy, but the irony is that many household chemicals can do just the opposite if you’re not careful. Failing to use and store cleansers and other chemicals properly can expose children, pets and others to serious risks. This is why it’s crucial for parents to be aware of the proper procedures for storing the common chemical agents you have around the house. Doing so can reduce the chances you or someone you love could suffer from a chemical-related accident or injury.

For instance, many incidents occur for the simple reason that someone didn’t know what a particular bottle or can contained. Labels may become faded or worn off with time, or containers may be repurposed to hold other products. Making sure your bottles and cans are all clearly labeled and kept in their appropriate storage areas is key to preventing this type of mistake. It’s also a good idea to check every container for signs of leaks or cracks that could lead to hazardous spills.
