Today’s guest post comes to us from Lisa Johnson of Fall For Fishing, and she writes about fishing in Nevada. More specifically, fishing in Northern Nevada. She discusses a couple locations, like Pyramid Lake, Wild Horse Reservoir and Knott Creek Reservoir and also covers some of the rules and regulations you need to follow while fishing in the State of Nevada. Nevada has some of the most scenic locations in the western United States when it comes to lakes, rivers, streams and other bodies of water.

Also, as a former employee of the American Sportfishing Association where I worked on the KeepAmericaFishing.org website (which I highly recommend you visit), this guest post hits close to home. I have always loved fishing in Nevada since I was a young child at Frenchman Lake to the north of Reno. The thrill of a flutter of taps at the end of your fishing pole and I was hooked as a lover of all things fishing. You’ll often find, anyone who has fished in their lifetime, that a lot of great memories spring from their memories fishing with family. This next Saturday, June 10, 2017 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day (described below). Get out to the Sparks Marina or venture to another fishing spot somewhere near you and you don’t have to pay for a license or any stamps. Go fishing in Nevada with your family this weekend in Northern Nevada

Fishing in Nevada has never been more enjoyable, especially with the winter we just had and the runoff from the snow melt filling up our waterways. If you feel like having a nice weekend with family, Northern Nevada is one place to look, especially for a fishing trip. The exotic waters and the species they contain is one memorable adventure to look forward to after another when fishing in Nevada.

Nevada personifies the idea of lake diversity. Did you know that due to its proximity to the mountains of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and deserts below, it gives anglers a wide variety of choices to fish? The scattered alpine lakes offer an amazing view of the large pines, untouched waters, and enthusiastic trout.

Even with access to the lakes being difficult and some are easy to get to, the vast area is perfect for exploration for you and your family especially at or around Lake Tahoe to the west when it comes to fishing in Nevada. Take a Summer weekend with your family to come fishing or even learn how to fish as this is the perfect time for fishing in Nevada.

Once you come to Northern Nevada, you will have a tour guide who will welcome all your questions. You should know that there are various parts of Northern Nevada where you can go fishing. Just don’t forget to carry your rod and reel and also remain open minded to the opportunity of day fishing or even fishing at night.

Some Of The Best Lakes For Fishing In Northern Nevada

Despite Nevada being one of the the driest regions in the United States, it holds numerous lakes suitable for fishing. Some of them are:

1. Pyramid Lake: Pyramid Lake prides itself in holding the world record for the largest trout caught at 41-pounds. You can also enjoy catching cutthroat trout weighing over twenty pounds using a fly rod from a ladder. You should keep in mind that you can use midges and foam beetles to catch monster trout.
   

   

   While there, you won’t have to worry about where to get a ladder as well as shooting heads, there are retail outlets that cater to your needs nearby like Cabela’s in I-80 near Verdi, Scheels in Sparks, Dick’s Sporthing Goods at Meadowood Mall and Orvis at The Summit outdoor mall in South Reno.

2. Wild Horse Reservoir: Wild Horse Reservoir found in the north of Elko is quite an unique site when it comes to fishing in Nevada. It holds various species of fish including the rainbow trout, the yellow perch, smallmouth bass and many others.Load up your car and drive your family to enjoy fishing here in northeast Nevada.
   

   

3. Knott Creek Reservoir: Have you ever wanted to go to a place to try “catch and release” fishing in Nevada? Then, this is the place to go. You need to add this location as one of your go-to sites in Nevada. The site is in the Pine Mountains in the county of Humboldt.You won’t forget the memories that come with the experience there.
   

   

However, before embarking to go fishing in Nevada, you should know about the various requirements and regulations to be allowed to fish in the lakes and streams of Northern Nevada. Different regions have different needs, such as what fishing tackle and other gear to bring, but the general rules are:

License Requirements for Fishing

Everyone 12 years-old and older is required to hold a fishing permit. A fishing license is required for anglers, whereas the number of fish taken by nonresidents’ anglers of 12 years-old and below isn’t supposed to exceed 50% of the limit provided by the law.

You should also know that this permit requirements also applies to anyone who fishes using spear, bow or even an arrow fishing methods when fishing in Nevada.

1. Trout stamp: The trout stamp requires that if you catch or possess a trout, you must carry it on your own. The only exception is if you or any of your family is under 12, and is fishing under the law of “Take Me Fishing,” a valid short term permit for fishing or even during a consecutive day, they are not required to get the trout stamp.Also annually, every Spring, there is a free fishing day. On this day you can fish without the trout stamp. This year, it is on June 10, 2017. If you live in Reno, Nevada, there is a fishing activity at the Sparks Marina from 7:00AM – 11:00AM PDT, where Scheels staff and other fishing experts will provide fishing poles and tackle for children to fish or learn how to fish during this year’s free fishing day. 2. Second Rod Stamp: With this kind of requirement, you are allowed to fish in Nevada with a second combination of hook, rod, and line as long as you have the second-rod stamp. Regardless of age, you must first obtain a fishing license which is valid or even have a short-term permit.You should also know that you are not allowed at any time to have more than two combinations of a hook, rod and reel, and line.
3. Limits: The limits requirement involves the maximum number of fish you are supposed to take by law and can also be reduced. If you like catching a lot of fish, here you have to learn to restrain yourself on what you take home. The good part is that any fish you catch and release back to the waters doesn’t count toward the limit requirement.Another interesting thing to know is that the daily possession limit isn’t defined in Northern Nevada for the entire state of Nevada. For anglers like me, you cannot have in possession more than one limit. The state of Nevada is divided into regions and each region has its own limits for fishing in Nevada, not only on weight and size, but the number of each species you can take home with you. So please make sure you are aware of the limits where you fish.
4. Seasons and hours: The exact weekend that you plan to go fishing with your family has never been easier. Fishing in Nevada is open all year round with no limit to fishing times and dates. Therefore you can just wake up one weekend and head out to the next perfect fishing site at night or even during the day depending on your preference.
5. Filleting fish: You can fillet your fish before transporting it. What you should be careful about is that it is unlawful to waste any part of edible game fish despite the reason causing the waste.
6. Methods of fishing: The fishing methods law is inclusive for you and your family depending on your preferences. It allows for spear fishing anywhere except in Lake Topaz and Lake Tahoe. Also, you should remember that unless you have the second-rod stamp, you are allowed to fish with only one combination of hook, line, and rod.You are allowed to use baits but not using the protected and game fish as bait. Chumming is also prohibited in Lake Tahoe and Topaz Lake, Spooner Lake as well as the whole Ruby Lake National area. Also, while you are ice fishing, you are allowed to cut no more than 10 inches of diameter of ice.
7. Review all Nevada fishing regulations before you fish: Annually The Nevada Department of Wildlife holds a “Free Fishing Day” on the second Saturday in June. During free fishing day, you can fish in any public water within the state with no need to buy a fishing license or trout stamp. All catch limits and applicable laws apply, so please make sure you know them before heading out to where the map turns blue.Here is a list of regulations on eRegulations.com if you want to learn more.

Conclusion

Despite Nevada being the driest and one of the most arid parts of the United States, it’s diversity of lakes, rivers, streams, and other bodies of water have proven to be a great place to fish hence why I am promoting fishing in Nevada. If you are a nature-loving, outdoorsman, or sportman kind of person, you can go to the Pine Mountains and enjoy the view there as you practice how to fish, for newbies.

At night and during the day, you and your family can fish without any restriction and even try the catch and release sort of fishing which is fun too. You can even try spear or arrow fishing in Nevada for the first time, to break the monotony of using rod, hook, and line.

You can get out there and just pack for the weekend because everything is so close and head out to fish in Northern Nevada and share fishing with your family as one of the unforgettable adventures you wouldn’t want to miss. Apples, pumpkins, crafts, train rides, food and fun… All a part of the experience at Apple Hill.

This year, my family and I once again returned to Apple Hill. Our experience this year on October 12, 2013, was exceptional as always. During this visit, we visited Cardanini’s Pumpkin Patch (#42), Rainbow Orchards (#10) and El Dorado Orchards (#19). During this trip in particular, my children were finally at a great age to go out in the field and pick out a pumpkin on their own and boy, did they enjoy it.

Cardanini’s Pumpkin Patch (#42)

Cardanini’s Pumpkin Patch is a very quaint pumpkin patch conveniently located near one of Apple Hill’s busiest and well visited stops, High Hill Ranch (#1). It is actually right next door to it and their hay ride passes right through this location. While we were there, as it was our first stop, but also nearly lunch time, we grabbed a quick bite to eat. I had a delicious Tri-Tip sandwich and my wife and kids enjoyed a hot dog each.

When we finished our quick and relatively inexpensive meal, we ventured out into the pumpkin patch. This pumpkin patch still had every pumpkin on the vine and they were all ready to pick off the vine. When you first enter, you can ask for a pair of pruners to cut the pumpkin off of the vine. With our tool to cut the pumpkin off of the vine we found five very ample sized pumpkins to bring home.

While I paid for the pumpkins (a total of $20; I was blown away by the price by the way), the kids ventured through the corn maze (that was free for visitors to navigate through). They had a great time.

If you’re looking for something you haven’t tried yet at Apple Hill or if you’re looking for great people, pumpkins and inexpensive food for Apple Hill, this is the place to stop.

Rainbow Orchards (#10)

Next, we decided to take a drive to Rainbow Orchards. Now that we had our pumpkins in our car and mission the rest of the day was to relax, enjoy the sites and just experience the day. Rainbow Orchards is very well known for their “HOT apple cider DONUTS”. The line for getting some donuts wrapped around their barn/store area. They are very high in demand and well worth the wait. I would highly recommend a stop here just for the donuts.

While we were there, my daughter sat down to get her face painted. She chose a rainbow with a star. It looked very cute on her. She refused to wash her face for the rest of the day and she even made a deal to sleep overnight before she would wash her face paint off. We obliged, being the parents we are, we didn’t want to take away any of her happiness made during that day.

Being in the mid-high 70’s that day, temperature-wise, before we left, we grabbed some mini apple cider cartons. They were the perfect size to quickly quench your thirst as well as the size perfect for a kid to enjoy. It was very tasty.

El Dorado Orchards (#19)

Our final stop of the day was El Dorado Orchards. We stopped because they have a kid-size train to ride and our kids absolutely love train rides. In fact, we took them on The Polar Express last year; that’s how much they love train rides. Once we took a ride on the train, we again grabbed another snack. We had some nachos, a soda and chips to keep the kids’ hunger at bay for the ride home. While we were at this location I spotted something out of the corner of my eye.

It was a Nevada Wolf Pack sign. Richard Hight of Battle Born Metal Works, a Reno, NV resident, was selling some sports signs made out of metal. Each colored to represent the team. He had signs for the Wolf Pack, the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco 49ers and many more. He practically had every major sports team including the Nevada Wolf Pack. I just had to pick up the vintage Wolfie Nevada Wolf Pack logo sign. From what I hear from my contacts at Silver and Blue Outfitters, Richard is working on getting licensed by the NCAA and University of Nevada to sell them professionally, but for now, they are just a craft item that you can pick up just like many other craft items for sale at just about every location in Apple Hill. I must say that Battle Born Metal Works make quality merchandise and I would gladly buy another one should I run into him again in the future at a local craft show in the area.

Before we left, we were going to make an obligatory stop at Boa Vista Orchards (#3), but as luck would have it, El Dorado Orchards was selling Boa Vista Orchards Apple Cider right there on the premises. That just made my day. That Apple Hill growers were working together to make it convenient for the consumer, is just one example of the high quality, friendliness and experience you can expect during a trip at Apple Hill.

Even though we could only make one trip this year to Apple Hill, it was, like always a trip to remember. Our kids really enjoyed the day away from Reno and my eyes, sprit and demeanor always perk up when I get to visit one of my favorite places on Earth.

If you haven’t been to Apple Hill yet, you should definitely make the trip anytime from September through December. It is an experience to remember.

The Nut Tree Plaza is a nice pit stop off I-80 in Vacaville, CA for parents and kids alike to play and have fun.

Traveling to Northern California, my entire life, to visit family was a pretty regular thing. As a child, I remember stopping in Vacaville, CA to visit The Nut Tree and ride the train. At the time, Vacaville was truly a cow town until the Vacaville Premium Outlets were built. Sadly, in the late 1990’s, The Nut Tree closed until it was recently rebuilt as a shopping area. Located right off Interstate 80, The Nut Tree started as a roadside fruit stand and has since grown into a massive complex that includes a small airport.

Recently, my Nana (my grandmother on my mom’s side) and Mom mentioned to me that The Nut Tree had reopened and I knew, on our next trip to the Bay Area, we would need to make a stop; probably more so because of the memories I had as a child myself.

I was excited to find the kids area to be so well thought out. I think it’s a brilliant move on the architects of The Nut Tree’s part to mix shopping, a kids fun area, and eating; all in one place.

It’s the new and improved Nut Tree! Keeping some of the classic Nut Tree items, such as the rocking horses, life size giraffe statue, classic train and carousel and adding some new favorites such as a life-sized Checkerboard and Chess set all made for an amazing adventure with the kids. The Nut Tree Kiddie Area also includes mechanical rides that cost a quarter, all just steps away from Fenton’s Famous Ice Cream Parlor and a retail store of the Jelly Belly Factory (view our article about the Jelly Belly factory).

The kids were beyond excited and we even wound up stopping there a second time on our trip. The prices for the rides are affordable and the staff was incredibly friendly, even when the almost two year-old had a two year-old tantrum. We had lunch and ice cream at Fenton’s, which was incredibly yummy.

I highly recommend a stop on your way to the bay next time you find yourself in Nor Cal.

Slip yourself a Gar Woods Wet Woody and forget the worries of the day while relaxing and peering out onto Lake Tahoe.

Take a drive up to Lake Tahoe for a lovely lunch on the patio at this wonderful restaurant bar and grill. Have the beautiful blue waters of Lake Tahoe shimmering behind you as you sip on a “Wet Woody“. This restaurant is a favorite of Northern Nevadans and Northern Californians alike.

This restaurant is one of the few restaurants with seating on the water in Lake Tahoe and one of the only to have a boat dock for boaters dock their boat. It’s a nice luxury if you happen to have a boat to cruise Lake Tahoe.

Gar Woods is known for the Wet Woody, which is a rum cocktail. There is a traditional Wet Woody, but they offer an extensive menu of signature cocktails, including about 20 different kinds of “Wet Woodies”.

Gar Woods is an excellent lunch option with the girls, a nice Summer date night with your hubby, a banquet or event a wedding reception. With picturesque views and great food and drink, you can’t go wrong at Gar Woods.

Take a ride on a real historic steam engine locomotive in the heart of the Nevada State Capitol at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

Just about every child is enthralled with trains. When I was a teenager, I encountered my first train obsessed toddler. He loved Thomas the Train. Nearly all his toys were train-related and he even had videos of trains (Yes, VHS. Remember those?). I thought he was so cute and remember myself loving the experience of going to Carson City as a child and getting to ride the train. Now that my children, especially my son, are intrigued with trains and have Chugginton to watch and enjoy regularly, we knew it was time to take a trip to Carson City, Nevada to visit The Railroad Museum.

The Railroad Museum in Carson City is part of the State of Nevada Division of Museums and History. It’s a beautiful facility. It is immaculately clean and well cared for. The trains are maintained so well that one of the trains, the McKeen Motor Car #70, was recently named a National Historic Landmark.

Every weekend a different train is on the tracks for visitors to ride the rails. Check out their schedule.

While I feel like I practically grew up at this museum, this experience was especially meaningful for me to take my own children and share part of my own childhood. We also took their cousin, J, who was so thrilled to be there. It was great to see the childrens’ excitement as the train started up the tracks. We had a chance to climb into the engine car and feel the heat of the steam engine. We also spent the rest of our trip walking around the parked trains and racing on the handcar up and down the tracks. Our children, A and N, rode on that several times. The museum volunteer was so pleasant to our kids and very patient with the two of them as well.

When we visited the Carson City Train Museum in May 2012 on Memorial Day weekend it was extra special occasion because with the purchase of admission tickets, we got to ride the train as many times as we wanted that day.

The museum staff had most of their rail cars out on display and we got to go inside just about all of them. The McKeen Motor Car was the most luxurious to see.

We saw the old railway state line marker as well. It had an old picture with it that showed how the trains passing by would sometimes stop there on the way to California or on the way into Nevada.

We finished the day off with purchasing our very own wooden train whistles to take home, the kids still pull them out and play conductor regularly.

Overall, our experience was a fantastic one at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City.

With the new I-580 freeway open from Reno, a trip to Carson City is a piece of cake. Take a drive to Carson and ride the rails!

Adventures at Apple Hill: Part 2 — Apples ripe for the picking at Apple Hill. Family memories made to last a lifetime.

Last Saturday my husband, David, and I decided to take the drive for some Adventures at Apple Hill. From our house in South Reno, NV to Camino, CA it’s roughly 2 hours, so it may seem like a long venture for some apples, pumpkins, and baked goods, but most Northern Nevadans agree, it is definitely worth the trip. I hadn’t been to Apple Hill in nearly a decade, so I was looking forward to the adventure. Plus, this was my son’s first time of what will hopefully be an annual event, so I felt the twinges of a new tradition in the making. With excitement in the air and the fingerlings of a cold front on the way, we hopped in the car and drove to Camino that is near Placerville, California to visit Apple Hill.

As Will mentioned in his previous post, Apple Hill isn’t just one orchard, but a community of orchards, collectively known as the Apple Hill Growers Association. In total there are over 50 farms, orchards, wineries, and markets dotting the landscape of Placerville. This makes it impossible to walk from one attraction to another, so plan on either driving and parking or catching a ride on the convenient Apple Hill Shuttle, which is essential if you want to partake in some of the excellent adult libations along the way. You see, there are a couple wineries and brewery at Apple Hill as well. The ride is free and the bus arrives at marked spots every 15-20 minutes, so it is a great option if you know you’re going to be drinking during your visit or if you just want to be green and save on emissions, it being California and all.

While I love wine, my reason for this two hour drive was simple; I wanted to pick apples. It’s important to note that not all orchards allow you to wander through the trees to pick your own apples. The orchards that do are called “U-Pick” orchards and are marked not only on the Apple Hill maps, but usually with a big sign in front. According to my most recent count, there are eleven orchards in Apple Hill that allow U-Pick and are designated on the map legend with a “UP”. I was adamant that the only places we stop were the ones that granted my family and I permission to meander through the tree lanes to fill my own bucket.

David wanted to start on the East side of Apple Hill, as it was the first from our direction. Therefore, we settled on Hangtown Kid Apple Orchard (#15).

It was a pleasant surprise that Hangtown was also organic, which we found out as we wandered the apple trees. The trees were smaller, which made it easy for my son to pick apples himself. We asked the growers, a very sweet husband and wife team, and they explained they grow dwarf Fuji apple trees, which apparently produce a sweeter apple. One taste and there was no doubt; these apples were delicious. After walking and picking for roughly 15 minutes, we brought our 15-20 apples to the growers and I was ready to shell out the cash. Imagine my surprise when the total costs came to $3! Just think, if you had purchased roughly seven to eight pounds of organic Fuji apples at a local grocery store, you would be paying a minimum of $10-$15 dollars, maybe more. With that happy news, we went to their sister orchard across the street to pick out some pumpkins.

I have actually never been to a pumpkin patch that was a real pumpkin patch with pumkins still on the vine. Usually, the pumpkins have been cleaned, stems trimmed, and they are piled on the ground just waiting for someone to pick them up.

This pumpkin patch was authentic. Pumpkins in all shapes, sizes, and colors were randomly sprawled about the place. Some were still green while others were white and of course, your traditional token orange pumpkins.

After trampling through vines and allowing C to go a little overboard with the mini pumpkins, we finally found the perfect ones. For six pumpkins it came to $17. Not too shabby.

At this point, I was starving, so our next destination was lunch. We stopped at Bodhaine Ranch (#68), mainly because there was a large wooden sign on the front that mentioned apple-smoked sausage dogs. Yummy! After some imaginative parking by my husband, we walked in and ordered some of the best sausage and apple dogs I have ever tasted. In true Apple Hill form, instead of regular condiments, we were given apple sauce. We also ordered an old-fashioned apple pie slice to share. Now, I should preface this by saying I make a mean apple pie and sadly, I wasn’t overly impressed with this one. There were crates of apples for sale that looked delicious, but we didn’t drive two hours to shop like a grocery store, so we moved on to the next U-Pick farm. David also informed me he wanted fudge, so our goals were in place.

We up to this point we stuck on the east side of Apple Hill and decided to head west. This ended up being a mistake. I’m not sure if it was the time we tried to get to the other end or an accident ahead, but we ended up only moving 500 yards in twenty minutes.

Defeated, we pulled a u-turn and headed back to the east side and to Apple Ridge Farms (#20) where I saw a sign that said, “fudge kitchen”. Thankfully, the kitchen was fully stocked with every type of fudge imaginable and they gave out free samples, a dangerous thing to do in a fudge shop. Should find yourself stopping by, I highly recommend their mint and cookies & cream flavors.

It was starting to get late in the afternoon, so we decided one more stop and then time to head home. I chose my last U-Pick, Denver Dan’s Apple Patch (#14). Denver Dan grows mainly Fuji and Golden Delicious apples but after I implored about my beloved granny smiths he told me he has one tree in the front. Fortunately, that one tree was bursting with fruit and I quickly filled a large bucket of perfect grannies. We ended up getting a few more Fujis and called it a day at Denver Dan’s Apple Patch.

Apple Hill is a must for families and children young and old in Northern Nevada. There is something so special about enjoying simple delights like picking apples.
